How to Choose a Topic For Your Blog

If you have decided to take up blogging, the question of which topic you should choose for your blog is by far one of the biggest and most important. When it comes to choosing a blog topic, it’s important to not only choose something that you’re passionate about, but something that’s going to drive plenty of traffic to your site thanks to interested readers flocking to learn more.

The topic which you choose could really make or break your blogging career, which is why we’ve put together this handy guide to help you make sure that you make the right decision.

BLogDon’t Follow the Crowd

When you start a blog, it’s important not to pick a blog topic simply because you see other people making money from blogging about it. Not only does this often result in people choosing a blog topic that they’re not really passionate about, picking a topic because it’s doing well elsewhere means that you’re entering an industry with tons of competition. Remember that simply because other bloggers are making money from blogging about a certain topic doesn’t guarantee that you will too.

Choose Something You Are Passionate About

Whether it is cars, DIY, cooking or even your kids – choosing something that you are passionate about for your blog niche is definitely the best route to take. When you are passionate about something you will enjoy writing about it, and keeping your blog updated with plenty of tasty new content will never seem like a huge chore.

Don’t be put off by thinking that nobody will be interested in your blog – look at all the successful ‘mommy bloggers’ out there – if your content is interesting and engaging, people will read it.

Find a Main Focus

You should avoid writing about too many different topics at once on your blog. Whilst it’s fine to have a range of topics that all fit in well with each other, if your blog posts are constantly going off on a tangent as you cover a huge variety of topics, your blog will look messy and unorganized as it will lack focus.

It is crucial to pick just ONE idea, rather than starting a blog about every topic that you’re passionate about. Remember that you’re not limited to just one blog in your lifetime! It’s far better to start multiple blogs on multiple topics, than one blog that covers them all.

Finding an Idea

What if you’re completely out of ideas? If you’ve been sat wracking your brains for something to blog about and are completely stuck, it might help to write a list of all the things that you’re interested in and wouldn’t mind writing about.

When you write the list, think of all of your hobbies, passions, experiences, skills and education and use it to derive blog topics. Having everything down on paper often makes it easier to choose, and you might find that the perfect idea for a blog topic simply jumps out at you.

How did you choose your blog topic? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
